Dear Jerome,
I just read with much interest your post advising about dietary changes (low carb, high fat...) that helped your anxiety issues. I have had an anxiety problem for over 20 years (characterized by an annoying Bodily Focused Repetitive Behaviour of touching/pressing my forehead) which heavily diminishes my quality of life. I have been on benzodiazepines for almost 15 years, until I quitted about 10 months ago. Now I am suffering even more anxiety and am desperately looking for alternative approaches that do not involve returning to benzodiazepines. Kava definitively sounds promising (very new to it, I've been learning a lot about it over the last month and will now be testing it - still trying to fully understand the potential safety issues, especially as they relate to taking other prescription drugs (Effexor).
Do you have any references - such as a website - about this anxiety-defeating dietary approach? It would be great to try that!
Thank you so much in advance....!
Kind regards,
Juan

Hey Mike,
While I don't know your situation exactly, I am very familiar with panic disorder and its plethora of symptoms. I had it so bad at one point, I remember my girlfriend handing me a glass of water, and I emptied it, cleaned it and refilled it, out of fear she was trying to poison me. I had panic attacks all day long, some lasting for hours. I was on benzos for years. I had a "great" doctor who told me, "take as much as you need!"
What really made a big difference for me was a radical diet change. I drastically reduced carbohydrates, completely avoided any form of sugar, increased saturated fat intake to be my major source of calories, and started eating organ meats again mostly in the form of grass fed, organic beef liver. I more or less followed the paleo dietary guidelines with a generous helping of high fat cheeses and some extra starches.
It has made a hell of a difference. I haven't had a panic attack in years now. It took a while at first, but the strong nutritional basis helped me regain my mental cool. I'm going through a very stressful time in my life now due to job, family in hospital, and young children, but it just doesn't phase me like it used to. I've been off the benzos for three years after a very slow taper.
You may want to try dietary changes. I use the kava now as a treat at the end of the day. But I really believe you can beat anxiety back to a useful survival tool that it was meant to be, not the parasitic, constant companion it can become.
As far as a "Mobile Moi", what I used to do is throw a scoop of finely ground powder under my tongue and swish it around in my mouth for as long as I could tolerate, then drown it with a quick shot of water. I think the saliva, and mouth absorption, helped me feel the kava quicker.
Finally, a spoon full of apathy helps the day go by. Learn to not give a shit about the unimportant things in life.
Good luck man, panic disorder is living hell!
