Hello all,

I was hoping someone here could help me figure out what happened to me earlier. So, I'm relatively new to Kava (I've been using pk extract and kkrus extract). Anyway, earlier today I took about 6 tsp of KKRU micro pouni Ono and within an hour my vision was really blurring, my motor skills were off, and I was very nauseas. My heart was also fluttering. Once the effects went away (Minus) I tried the KKRU micro vanatua ( 5tsp) with some ginger root and puked an hour later which is very rare for me to do. Honestly, I'm in twelve step recovery and don't want to feel drunk. The whole reason I started using Kava was as an alternative to benzos for anxiety for fear that benzos may be a trigger. Can some one please help me? I'm about to throw all of it away.

You got what's known as krunked to a certain extent. Be sure you use more of the body/heavy cultivars. Heady ones will get you there fast. See the kavapedia above to help define these terms. Even the body kavas will get you there if you drink it like a fish in water. As to the vomiting, do note another recent and active thread that may explain this.

@avahZ thank you for the quick reply! What thread are you talking about concerned with vomiting? I tried to find one to explain what happened, but was unlucky.

Look for the thread started by @Deleted User about qualitative testing. I don't won't to point fingers or hurt a good mans business and I frankly havnt used his Vanuatu kavas or ever done the acetone test.

I'll make it easy on you.... It took a lot not to puke last night after drinking KKRU micro Vanuatu... It was a sample I received and won't be ordering this one... But i do love the other KKRU products.

@Bulletproof how much experience do you have with kava?
some people are light weights and get hit good with small amounts, some strains are easier on the stomach while others are a bit rough, drinking micronized is akin to toss-n-wash...this puts more root particles in your belly and can cause stomach distress in some people, micronized kava is also more potent per tablespoon than traditionally prepped medium grind. Kava is a thing you have experiment with until you find proper dosages and methods that work for you.

I always recommend approaching a new kava slowly. Go ahead and mix up as many teaspoons as you want, but drink small shells every 20-30 minutes to see how it affects you, and stop when it feels right (or especially when it doesn't feel right). I almost always have a few half-finished mixes in my fridge.

@shakas I have been using it for about a month. I started with eclectic institute nakamal kava and moved to extracts and micro because of cost issues.
Kava pills are usually of pour quality, I don't know about that company specifically, so I can't say...but there are only 1 or 2 pill companies that have made proper noble, water extracted pills. Saving money by switching to extracts and micros doesn't sound right to me...they're expensive. Micro can be worth it, since it's a bit stronger and easy to prep....but I'd suggest getting a good strainer and learning how to make traditional medium grind.

As for finding your best dose, like Kimmer said, start with a spoon, give it 20 min, gauge how you feel, repeat as necessary, if your eyes start gettin' loose and you don't wanna continue down the path to Krunksville, then stop and eat a little or watch tv or something.

I'm having some issues with nausea tonight as well with 6tbsp of Nambawan blended and strained with about 16 Oz of water/milk (drank about 2/3 of this mixture over an hour.....so about 12 oz) I was thinking it was dehydration or maybe the volume of liquid was too much. So @Kimmer what would you say a small shell is? I'm trying to find the right amount/timing. I know it's all kind of personal and there are a lot of variables bit I think any advice will help work through this experimental stage. Thanks!

Micro can make you nauseous as others have stated, I love the convenience of micro so I drink it when I'm too lazy for traditional... Usually you don't puke when spacing out your shells... Let's put it this way... I normally drink two tablespoons of micro to one cup water... I can normally drink it down without issue... Nausea sets in sometimes depending on strain and a little bit of minced ginger in water fixes me right up... Last night with only 1tbs in one cup of water, every drink had my gag reflexes going and the effects were not pleasant when consuming the KKRUS Vanuatu micro... Just saying this is most likely why it pushed you over the edge... You were already experiencing nausea... Personally I wouldn't touch that strain again

Hey Megan,

A shell is 4-6oz. I always stick to 4 ounces, and my usual night will consist of 2-4 shells, depending on the cultivar.

@Bulletproof and @Megan :
Additionally, nausea is generally from makas (leftover root you really shouldn't be drinking) getting through your strainer and into your drink. A good strainer that doesn't let in makas is really necessary with kava.

FYI, all of my medium-grind orders come with a free strainer bag so you won't have to worry about which to buy :)

What you described sounds like a fairly normal experience when you consume a lot of kava. I'd recommend that you try different varieties and do some research and read reviews to use as a guide. Also, start out very low in the dosage and work you're way up until you are comfortable so you can decide if it's for you or not. As a benzo and kava user, I can say that kava is a very good alternate to benzos but it isn't going to be perfect for every situation. Depending on your situations and goals, there may be times where a benzo is best and other times kava is best.

Slow your roll. Sounds like too much too fast. 6 TBS of nambawan is a lot in an hour, even if you didn't finish it. Every kava has different effects, and will be drunk at a different pace than other varieties. I've had the Vanuatu micro, and I could see how one could get nauseous if it were consumed too quickly. If you chase the kavain buzz with it, the dhk will eventually catch up with you by the hour's end and nausea will set in.
Space out your doses until you understand the variety. I do candied ginger and it helps.

That's alot maybe too fast as other members have mentioned.
Try small quanity of med grind 2-3 tbls then consume 1 -2 shells wait 30 min see how you feel.
One time I overdid it with an instant and my couch put me in headlock and was wicked nauseous. Hope that helps. Also add fresh ginger root to the grog.

I find raw fresh ginger root a bit powerful and it actually makes things worse. I'm better having kava without the ginger. If I feel dodgy ever I always have ginger root in hot water which whilst not cooking it does take some of the raw root powerful flavour away. Mind you I haven't needed it yet after kava but I'm taking things relatively lightly for now.
