How much coconut oil per day?

I just bought a jar of coconut oil from the baking aisle. How much should I take per day to help with dermo? Maximum 1/3 tbsp per day?

I just took 1 full tbsp of it and it was gross, I feel like I'm gonna vomit. I think it was too much.

I couldn't find the capsules so I just went with the jar.

I'm a big fan of coconut oil, provided you get the right stuff. When I first starting ingesting it by itself, it also gave me a sour stomach that made me want to vomit. Now I can take it in large quantities (4-6 table spoons) and it feels great. Start slow, build up.

You want to make sure you're not getting hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated coconut oil. Hydrogenated fats contain trans fat, which is well known as a very dangerous substance for the cardiovascular system. Get the extra virgin, expeller pressed, organic oil and make sure its not the cheap hydrogenated crap.

Why do you want to start taking Coconut Oil?

I do for dietary purposes. It keeps me full in the morning and really helped me lose the belly fat. I don't know how much evidence there is for it preventing dermo, but it definitely holds a litany of other health benefits.

A lot of people fear the fact that coconut oil is approximately 95% saturated fat. But with study after study coming out clearly showing that saturated fat has no effect on heart disease, there should be no concern there. Saturated fat is good! It is your body's preferred fuel. In fact, if you ingest too much in the way of carbohydrates, your body will converted to saturated fat to be used later.

Embrace the fat!

I'm convinced ingesting coconut oil does help with dermo. Since I've been taking the capsules I've had next to no dermo. I ordered some in bulk direct from the manufacturer and they didn't get delivered to my wife's address until after I had come back to London so I have run out and I can already feel my skin getting drier.

Coconut oil is great for internal and extrernal use. If you have specific areas that are a problem, apply coconut oil to them once or twice a day. It's a great moisturizer and it has antibacterial and antifungal properties as well. I tend to develop a yeast rash in the summer from sweating on my chest area. Coconut oil clears it up and has cleared my daughters yeast diaper rash up as well. As far as ingesting it, I actually enjoy the taste of it in my coffee. You should look for organic cold pressed coconut oil to get the maximum benefits.

We use it when we cook rice. Fry up the uncooked rice in a pot with the coconut oil. Add onions, or garlic, or ginger, if you like. Or anything else for that matter, then add an equivalent amount of water and cook till done. Nice fragrant coconut rice.

Omega 3 is more important than omega 6 for dermo...there's actually an ideal ratio that I can't recall at the moment, but I remember that it's more O3 than O6. Coconut oil has omega 6 but not omega 3, so make sure you eating plenty of fish along with the coconut oil. Vitamin A is supposed to be good too, so add some yams and sweet potatoes to your shopping cart as well.

This can be used as a preventative or as a treatment, if you stick with it consistently. However, don't expect it to be a cure all, a determined kava drinker will certainly still acquire some dermopathy at some point. :pompus:

To clear up the simple surface issue of dry, flaky skin, AmLactin is a quick and effective remedy. It doesn't treat the deeper issue though, so isn't really a complete cure.

Beef liver, particularly grass fed and finished, has absurd amounts of vitamin A. Beats any plant source.

Coconut oil does have a tiny amount of omega-6 (and omega-9) but the vast majority of it is medium chain saturated fatty acids, which are neither omega-6 nor omega-3. These come in the form of Medium Chain Triglycerides (you can buy "MCT oil"), which are just 3 medium chain saturated fatty acids stuck together.

The "ideal" ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 intake for human beings is 1. But ingesting coconut oil is not likely to change that ratio very much either way because it does not contain much omega-6. So, yes, fish oil is good for you as well, but I don't know if it has been proven to prevent dermo either, although it is theoretically possible omega-3's could help, considering some of the symptoms of omega-3 deficiency:

"A wide range of health problems have been linked to omega-3 fat deficiencies, including:
  • Increased inflammation ...
  • Allergies and eczema ..." Source
It seems possible that something that prevents inflammation and eczema could help with dermo, but this is speculation.

A few days down the line since my last post on this subject and I can report that my skin got a lot drier. I've got hold of the capsules and started taking them again and I can feel them working slowly. I expect in a couple of days I'll be back to where I was.

I take coconut oil sometimes, when I got my first jar of the stuff I thought it would harmless to just eat a few tablespoons. Oh boy, I was wrong. I was on the toilet for hours.
