Kava Curious
So last night I tried my kava for the first time. GHK Micro Moi. Let me start by saying that I definitely DO NOT have a reverse tolerance, it was intense.
I work nights so I woke up around 4 in the afternoon. I debated eating something right when I woke up like I usually do, but knew that I had a better chance of feeling the Kava effects on an empty stomach, so at this point I hadn't had anything to eat for about 8 hours. I mixed one heaping tablespoon Moi with a glass of water and chugged. I had tried to prepare myself for the notoriously bitter taste, but good god is that stuff disgusting! Still I managed to down it in a few seconds and went and sat on the couch to watch some tv with my wife. She was also very curious to see how it would affect me. At first the only thing I could feel was the numbing of my mouth. After about 15 minutes I noticed a tingling in my hands. At first I thought I was just imagining it, maybe I was almost willing something to happen because I wanted it to work, I thought. In about another 5 minutes my face started feeling numb. Then I noticed a wave of euphoria rush over me. I was suddenly very calm and happy. My wife was watching a lifetime movie, which I usually detest, but I found myself so engaged in the movie, asking her questions about it and genuinely enjoying it. There was no doubt in my mind at this point that this stuff works. It was in no way a placebo, I very much felt it both physically and mentally. I have done OxyContin in the past while drinking and it closely resembled that feeling.
So this is where things take a turn for the worse. My wife noticed that I was "high" in her words, not mine, and wanted to try it. It had probably been about 30 or 45 minutes at this point since my first cup. I got up and made her a cup, and decided that if I was feeling this good I should make myself another and see what happens. BIG MISTAKE.
I made her a cup and myself another, this time mixing with cranberry juice (much, much better). We chugged. In about 15 minutes I felt like I was floating. If I turned my head to look at something it seemed like my eyes took a few seconds to catch up. This was definitely a "heady effect". The problem is it started making me extremely dizzy, and I felt as though I couldn't talk. It still felt good but the dizziness was really becoming a problem. That's when the nausea set in. I got up off the couch to head to the bathroom, and could barely hold myself up. My legs felt like jello and kept trying to buckle. I had to hold onto the wall to get to the toilet. I threw up. Felt a little better and went and got in bed. I slept for about 30 minutes and then got up and threw up again. I completed this cycle two more times. For the rest of the night I felt like crap, I couldn't eat and just felt generally sick. Finally around midnight it wore off and I was fine, and actually feel great today.
I don't blame the kava for my bad experience, I blame myself for taking too much. Too much of a good thing is bad no matter what it is. I guess I am just very sensitive to Kava, and I should have taken it slower. I told my wife if I had just been satisfied with the effects from the first glass I would have been fine. Maybe take another dose in a couple of hours instead of 30 minutes. Everyone will react differently with different tolerances, my wife said she just felt tired after she tried it, but she also said that the first time she smoked weed she didn't get high, which wasn't true for me. Maybe her RT is there.
I have two takeaways from my Kava experience. 1. YES IT DOES WORK, and it can be extremely intense. 2. PACE YOURSELF, especially if you are a newbie like me.
I will be drinking my kava again, this time in much smaller doses. The positive effects were amazing and unlike anything I have ever experienced, and I have been a heavy drinker, done rx meds and pot. Just be smart and prevent yourself from having a bad first experience like I did and you will love it.
