My first Kava Experience...Whoa

Kava Curious
So last night I tried my kava for the first time. GHK Micro Moi. Let me start by saying that I definitely DO NOT have a reverse tolerance, it was intense.

I work nights so I woke up around 4 in the afternoon. I debated eating something right when I woke up like I usually do, but knew that I had a better chance of feeling the Kava effects on an empty stomach, so at this point I hadn't had anything to eat for about 8 hours. I mixed one heaping tablespoon Moi with a glass of water and chugged. I had tried to prepare myself for the notoriously bitter taste, but good god is that stuff disgusting! Still I managed to down it in a few seconds and went and sat on the couch to watch some tv with my wife. She was also very curious to see how it would affect me. At first the only thing I could feel was the numbing of my mouth. After about 15 minutes I noticed a tingling in my hands. At first I thought I was just imagining it, maybe I was almost willing something to happen because I wanted it to work, I thought. In about another 5 minutes my face started feeling numb. Then I noticed a wave of euphoria rush over me. I was suddenly very calm and happy. My wife was watching a lifetime movie, which I usually detest, but I found myself so engaged in the movie, asking her questions about it and genuinely enjoying it. There was no doubt in my mind at this point that this stuff works. It was in no way a placebo, I very much felt it both physically and mentally. I have done OxyContin in the past while drinking and it closely resembled that feeling.

So this is where things take a turn for the worse. My wife noticed that I was "high" in her words, not mine, and wanted to try it. It had probably been about 30 or 45 minutes at this point since my first cup. I got up and made her a cup, and decided that if I was feeling this good I should make myself another and see what happens. BIG MISTAKE.

I made her a cup and myself another, this time mixing with cranberry juice (much, much better). We chugged. In about 15 minutes I felt like I was floating. If I turned my head to look at something it seemed like my eyes took a few seconds to catch up. This was definitely a "heady effect". The problem is it started making me extremely dizzy, and I felt as though I couldn't talk. It still felt good but the dizziness was really becoming a problem. That's when the nausea set in. I got up off the couch to head to the bathroom, and could barely hold myself up. My legs felt like jello and kept trying to buckle. I had to hold onto the wall to get to the toilet. I threw up. Felt a little better and went and got in bed. I slept for about 30 minutes and then got up and threw up again. I completed this cycle two more times. For the rest of the night I felt like crap, I couldn't eat and just felt generally sick. Finally around midnight it wore off and I was fine, and actually feel great today.

I don't blame the kava for my bad experience, I blame myself for taking too much. Too much of a good thing is bad no matter what it is. I guess I am just very sensitive to Kava, and I should have taken it slower. I told my wife if I had just been satisfied with the effects from the first glass I would have been fine. Maybe take another dose in a couple of hours instead of 30 minutes. Everyone will react differently with different tolerances, my wife said she just felt tired after she tried it, but she also said that the first time she smoked weed she didn't get high, which wasn't true for me. Maybe her RT is there.

I have two takeaways from my Kava experience. 1. YES IT DOES WORK, and it can be extremely intense. 2. PACE YOURSELF, especially if you are a newbie like me.

I will be drinking my kava again, this time in much smaller doses. The positive effects were amazing and unlike anything I have ever experienced, and I have been a heavy drinker, done rx meds and pot. Just be smart and prevent yourself from having a bad first experience like I did and you will love it.

You got a pretty good effect on one tbsp!! I generally need 3-4 tbsp to get a good
Kava effect. I've always been that way though, I need more than many others to get the same effect.

I've been in that boat too, being intensely krunk to the point of difficulty functioning. Never threw up though, knock wood.

It's nice you don't have RT -- that can be tricky to get past.

Wow! I had my first Kava this weekend and it was nothing like you described. I simply felt a bit relaxed and nothing more.

Your first experience before mixing a 2nd batch sounds great. And it's great it didn't follow you over into today like a hangover does!

Welcome to the forum @prelohded ! ::awesomesmiles:: And welcome to our little Kava club, the "Liteweight Kava Drinkers Club". That's some nice effects you got on so little kava. I'm a liteweight too and it is easy on the wallet plus you get maximum effects. What's not to like 'bout dat. :D

Yes another light weight here! Cheap date, the wifu on the other hand you first have to hit her in the head with a stick then give her kava for her to feel anything. But she gets other bunga bunga effects from kava.

Some folks are like that, but his first one was a moi and that stuff can go strait to your head.

I also did not experience the initial reverse tolerance. If you used two Tbsp of Micronized Moi, then I can see the effect being more than you expected. I'm not a lightweight with kava, normally if I use medium grind, I use 12-16 Tbsp per session but 2 Tbsp of micro Moi will definitely have me feeling good. I experience the naseau often with pretty much any kava except for extracts. I've never thrown up and sleep will make it go away, though. With the GHK micro, I usually start with 2 Tbsp and then add 1 or 2 more depending on how strong I want the effects to be.

That was my yestersay haha I had about 6 tablespoons of Solomon throughout the day. 2 in the am. Then 2 afternoon then 1 and then another later in the day... that last one was the mistake . Omg haha. I threw up so much and then felt better but I'm so dehydrated today haha. I'm taking a couple days off of kava to hydrate and re moisturize my skin too haha. I think the Solomon is not fully noble cause it just isn't as clean

I'll get nausea faster with Micronized then with ground root that's been strained. You found the secret to an intense session, an empty stomach. Also something to note, if you are currently taking any prescription medication regularly the kava may intensify that effect to the point of getting ill. Be careful with that. Sounds like it was just too much, too soon though. I'm currently drinking somewhere between 1-2 tbsp mixed into a 32 oz bottle sipping on it throughout the work day to tamp down the stress. Little goes a long way

I actually am on a prescription and was wondering if maybe that had something to do with it. Also my stomach was so empty I think it hit me extra hard. I just had a cup with 1 tablespoon after eating a snack and didn't feel much, maybe a little relaxed. I definitely have a mental block now with the taste and smell, just thinking about it gives me the chills.

I am quite sensitive to mo'i micro. A level tablespoon every 20 minutes, 3-4 in total will do me good. Something about the profile of mo'i gives me the jitters if I consume either too much or too quickly. The heady effects are quite pronounced.

So I ordered a great kava strainer off of amazon and decided to go ahead and strain the micro moi even though I know it's not necessary. I was actually surprised at the amount I was able to filter. This time i put 2 tbsp moi in my blender with 1 cup coconut milk, I cup water, some cinnamon bun coffee creamer and ice. While the taste still wasn't great for me it was much better than just water. It's amazing how potent the taste of kava is, it powers through everything. I'm feeling pretty relaxed right now it's been about ten minutes. Here are the pics of what I was able to strain.

Ya one bad experience with kava makes the flavor much worse lol. As I've said before. You know when you have to much when you cringe at the THOUGHT of the taste and smell. I've noticed I can also sMell it in my nose when ive had enough. Like a peppery in breathe

Yep if I have kava throughout the day I get to a point where I don't benefit any more than I already have from the effects and my jaw locks up and I cringe at the thought of tasting more of it. Take some time away if you need to, the mental block will go away unless you keep pushing the limits.

Don't get me wrong, I love Micronized kava and am not knocking it, but I'll say this. Any process or product that "shortcuts" the traditional soak, strain and knead of coarsely ground root also shortcuts or changes the experience. IMO, while drinking noble kava that was strained and kneaded in water, there is much more awareness of the effects and awareness of when enough is enough. It's easier to control your experience.

With a Micronized "toss 'n wash" approach I can't drink anywhere near the amount of the same liquid due to the aforementioned nausea and what not. Like I said, don't get me wrong, Micro/Instant has its time and place. I've used Micro Moi this week to help me through some stressful halves of days at work lately. If you really want to sit down and have a rich kava experience maybe go with traditional strain and knead and make yourself a nice, potent grog that you can sip or space apart to your liking. Something like a Borogu or Boronguru (I'd suggest Kalm with Kava's Borogu personally, look up some reviews) for a nice, middle of the road kava that will let you see what kava has to offer. Micronized is an easy entry into the world of kava but, like you unfortunately found, also hits the hardest when overused. I've been drinking kava for around 2 years now and, thankfully, never made myself physically ill. Dehydrated, yes, but never a time where the kava hit so hard I got sick.

Good luck as you go along, there are a lot of great resources available here. I'm already looking forward to my post-possible 10-11 hr workday kava later. Have some Kavaboy and Fiji Loa. that'll melt this stress away

Yeah today's my 12 hour day... I need to find gloves to knead this kava with though my hands look like reptiles from kneading... not joking ... it's bumming me out haha

Just mentioned elsewhere I'll put coconut oil on my hands before kneading. Some think it actually helps pull the good stuff out of the kava as well. then i'll wash up and apply more coconut oil. keeps the hands looking, feeling, hell even smelling good...

Feel free to ship those micro leftovers to my house ;) I'll be more than happy to drink your top-shelf-dregs. (Oxymoron of the day)
