Trip to Portland, OR. Bula Kava House

took a trip to portland for a bachelor party. it was the perfect spot, nice and weird. i knew i wanted to visit BKH while i was there but figured that it would be best to get after it right when we arrived in town as i had very little in my stomach after the long flights.

it was a nice chill joint. spent the afternoon. staff was cool.

picked up a bag of taveuni on my way out with noodle legs. they should have these in every city. all around good time. thanks for the hospitality, BKH!

Cool! I visited there back in 2014 and thought it was quite nice. Like that they have such a wide variety of Kava available at a time, and I loved the strong batch.

I used to live in Portland and drove by this many times in my pre-kava days. :( I was distracted with all the great micro brews. Just before I left portland, I bought some sub-standard waka (that give me the giggles but without much of the noble feeling) at the local Fijian shop. BKH will be at the top of my bucket list when I visit PDX.

Viceland is running a vice essentials on the owner of "Pok Pok" right down the street from BKH, and I caught myself looking for it and you get several glimpses of division where you can just about make out the Bula kava sign. I kept thinking "I bet this guy knows Judd" (@Bula Kava House ).

we decided to wait for another guy and another day to go to pok pok. never ended up going. :(

I wanted to post this in the right place and I think this is about as appropriate as anywhere else...

@Bula Kava House it's great to see more Tongan kavas on your list. I absolutely love Tongan kava and I'm especially excited about the Kula as it sounds not a million miles from my favourite kava ever. I'm looking forward to placing an order soon.

One question... on the menu is that $4 to $5 for one good strong shell of those kavas? That's pretty good value when you think about it. I'd maybe drink 2 or 3 strong shells on my way home from work and still spend less than having 2 or 3 beers.

I've met Andy Ricker before. He's restaurant royalty around here, obviously. I was at Pok Pok last weekend for the first time in probably 8 years, though I used to spend a good amount of time at their overflow bar, Whiskey Soda Lounge, which is two doors down from Bula. Pok Pok really does deserve to be so popular.

Yeah we took your advice and just went to soda lounge last time we were there. No line vs 45 min wait...sold!

That's interesting. Is it appropriating a culture strictly for financial gain, or is it showing an appreciation for and sharing a culture? Funny thing is, the most popular Mexican restaurant in Portland is called Porque No, and I'm almost certain it's owned by white people. No hubbub there.

We try not to walk a line that could lead to us being looked at as appropriating Pacific Islander culture. I've lived in the islands, and have close personal relationships all over the pacific. We employ islanders and take part in local islander events, as well as donate to Pacific Island organizations. Basically, we respect the plant and the cultures. Even so, any time I talk with an islander I express my gratitude for being able as "a white guy from Portland" to sell kava. We have quite a few islander customers, mostly Tongan and Fijian, who are totally cool with it, and appreciate us sharing the culture.

Thank God!
The Polynesians, Fijians, and Micronesians appropriated kava from Vanuatu. I don't see that as a bad thing at all! Political correctness is one of the deepest forms of bigotry.
