My homemade shell

So I bought a coconut in the supermarket as I just happened to see it. They don't always have them and they're not always that good but this one sounded full of liquid so I thought I'd have a go. I've halved it, drunk the water and removed the "meat". I've made myself a nice little shell and made coconut cream/milk from the rest of it. I've mixed almost 1 cup of the coconut cream topped up to 1 cup with coconut milk, 1 cup of regular milk and 1 cup of water with 8 tablespoons (it is a Saturday) of Taveuni which I don't know much about other than it's Fijian and last time I tried it I was distinctly underwhelmed. On my first shell and it's smaller than my usual drinking vessel, exactly 4 oz, so going to keep chugging til my mix is gone :)

By the way the shell is still a bit hairy, I need to sand it down a bit more.

I'm actually struggling with this every 20 minutes thing, how do you keep time? I need a timer but that would take away from the moment :)
Stay with the moment!! Don't time it. You're supposed to be relaxing. :p

Just go with the flow. Drink the next one when it feels right. ::chugger::

BTW, you didn't use a machete to half that, did you? How'd you do it, it's a nice cut!

Sorry, just seen your edit... I actually used a bread knife! I cut gently until I had a hole big enough to get the water out and then carried on. It's not perfect but it looks ok and the coconut cream in the kava has been nice.

I'm still underwhelmed with this kava, I had to mix up another batch which makes 16 tablespoons tonight. All I've got from it is feeling vaguely relaxed. I'm not sure about this 4oz at a time thing either. I think I prefer a lot less shells but big and strong, get some good kava in you and wait for it to hit.

My shells are also 4 oz. I haven't minded taking more shells throughout an evening but I'm stepping it up today with 8oz at a time. So far so good.
Awesome shell though, find a bigger coconut and get that big strong shell goin again!

For ages I've used a little cup that I bought on holiday in Cornwall one time so it's got good memories attached. It's probably about 6 oz which is about right for me. I'll try and get a bigger coconut and cut it higher up to give more room in the shell. I think tonight is more down to the root. I was chugging a shell every 20 mins or so and got about 5 out of the first batch then had to make up the second batch and went a bit slower as I was feeling effects even though I wasn't quite where I wanted to be. I just felt a bit weird for a while and now had some food and feeling not too bad. I'll let the food go down then get to sleep. I think I'll at least sleep ok.

Ya a bad root might be the problem. I use the same 20 min interval and get about 10-12 shells for 2 washes. It's nice in a social setting to pace it I find, taking the slow train to krunk town.

I didn't find that root very good last time I used it and spacing the shells definitely didn't help it!

You can listen to music. 6 pop songs is about 20 minutes. Or watch 1/2 of a 45 minute TV show. Or, I don't know, just look at a clock...?

I drink out of a glass or coffee cup... I've got this silicone "gourd" for yerba mate, but the problem is I keep knocking it over and making a mess. I'll probably just switch to a coffee cup for that also...

@Edward You've inspired me to give this a go, found a good sized coconut while grocery shopping today. What was your procedure, just a bread knife and some sand paper?

I used a bread knife but a proper saw would probably be better. First I ran a groove along the top to give me a rough half shell then sawed away with the knife until I'd got far enough into the shell to get the water out. After that I just kept sawing until I'd got right through. Use a knife to slice the flesh into smallish pieces and they just pop out. After that I used some sandpaper to smooth off the inside and get the hairy bits of the outside and gave it a good wash all over.

The side with the holes would probably make a good stand if you cut the top off. I might do another one with pictures and see if I can get a 6 oz shell as 4 oz is a bit small for me.

Thanks! sounds easy enough, will make for a good side project this week. I like the stand idea as well. ::happyshell::
