Mahakea is my #1 kava, and yes it can be moody at times. If I don't get as much of an impact it's usually my fault for the time of day, too close to dinner, too tired after dinner. One minute you don't think it is working much and then you do just one more tablespoon and BAM! POW! Hey there you are, krunky krunky. I find mostly all kava to be this way though. Most kava, if you do the same kind daily, fluctuates based on day to day changes in everything from sleep, eating, exercise, hormones, water/electrolyte balance, to brain chemistry and overall mood.
@John Bytell I also try to change up my kavas like you do because I find that I get better results by not sticking to the same chemotype/cultivar on a daily basis. Some kava cultivars saturate me faster than others, like the strong Fijian strains (waka). I would love to be able to consume these Fijian strains daily for weeks on end, but they tend to push me towards needing a break because of this saturation effect. This is why I save them for the party nights or just "because". I also find that sometimes the kava just tells me that its time for a kava-break to let my system purge out all things kava, usually 1-2 days, which kind of resets the kava clock.
@John Bytell Perhaps this is not just about you taking a break "once" to clear your system, maybe you should take more frequent breaks from kava, like a day off per week or whenever you start feeling like you're saturated. That's the feeling I usually get, just like eating too big of a meal and feeling like shit. Kava-Break time. When I go back for more kava after a short break it always hits with more intensity and happiness. Hello mahakea, there you are, my wonderful little friend.
